Anti-colonial Voices Barbados,

PREFACE - Rogues in Paradise Dissenting Voice
Yardfowl: A Voice to Challenge the Colonial Legacy.

Yardfowl is an imaginary person in Rogues in Paradise, influenced by various Bajans I have encountered and observed for many years. He embodies the voices of those who made it through and still grapple with the legacy of manifest destiny in Barbados.

Unlike the colonial stories, which typically skirt around the topic of slavery or method it with a sense of regret, survivors talk with emotions rooted in the genuine and lasting effects of physical, psychological, and mental abuse. Yardfowl is their voice-- vibrant, unfiltered, and grounded in the lived experiences of his ancestors. He reflects the durability and strength of those who withstood and conquered inhumane destruction, trauma, and systemic oppression.

While Yardfowl went to required secondary school and got a standard British education, he chose to speak in Bajan slang. This purposeful choice adds weight to his declarations, asserting his identity and heritage while challenging the status quo. He is outspoken, sensible, and critical of any efforts to gloss over the past or romanticize colonial history.

The Yardfowl Character:

Yardfowl as a Catalyst for Debate: In Rogues in Paradise, Yardfowl's voice acts as a continuous pointer of the darker facts behind Barbados' history. He provokes idea and debate, requiring other characters and readers to confront uncomfortable truths. In discussions with the author, Yardfowl dismisses any attempts to suggest that some planters or colonial figures showed moments of humanity. For him, even little acts of generosity are eclipsed by the systemic ruthlessness of slavery. This uncompromising attitude ends up being a vital lens through which the story explores the remaining effects of colonialism on modern Barbadian society. Yardfowls viewpoint pushes readers to believe critically about the effects of historical amnesia, challenging any disposition to gloss over the past's brutal truths.
