The Impact of Feudalism on Barbados: Landownership and Social Hierarchies.
In Barbados, feudalism's tradition was evident in how land was dispersed and managed. The island's plantation economy produced a society where a small elite held large quantities of land and wealth, while the majority of the population, including enslaved Africans and later on freedmen, had little power or autonomy.

This concentration of landownership mirrored the feudal estates of middle ages Britain, where the lords managed the land and individuals who worked it. The social hierarchies that emerged in Barbados were deeply entrenched, with race and class playing a considerable function in identifying one's location in society.

Even after the abolition of slavery, these hierarchies continued, affecting the island's social and economic structures well into the contemporary age.
