Golden Gloves boxing match helps raise money for Memphis kids' programs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A boxing match is coming to the Hickory Hill community this week to help raise money for kids’ programs. The Golden Gloves Regional Boxing match is returning to Memphis for the first time in 50 years. A portion of proceeds from the match will go toward summer programs and returning boxing lessons to the Pipkin Building. The community and Memphis Youth Services are hoping to sell out tickets to the match this weekend at the Hickory Hill Community Center, 3910 Ridgeway. FOX13 spoke with Ike Griffith from Memphis Youth Services, who said boxing at the Pipkin Building created life-changing opportunities, motivation and discipline for youth. The program helps to inspire youth with positive alternatives. Griffith said proceeds from the event will not only go toward boxing, but to other programs that help keep kids out of trouble and away from violence and crime. “Each December I have 8,000 to 10,000 children who apply for summer jobs and I’m only budgeted for 2,000. We have to come up with more innovative ways to support our children,” he said. The boxing match, hosted by Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, is Friday and Saturday. Tickets are on sale now at the Memphis Youth Services building across the street from the Liberty Bowl. Admission is $10 per night. Doors open at 5 p.m. For ticket info, call 901-636-6264.
